NARYN

  Town of Naryn with the population of 45.000 is small poor town, on the way to or from Chinese border. Built in 1865 as military fort clay it is still a base of Kyrgyz border detachment and army unit. 99% are Kyrgyz most are unemployed and poor. This is a great place for overnight stop on the Bishkek - Kashgar road over Torugart pass.

What to see:

1. Rug store on the side of central square offers a number of good deals on carpets.
2. Small Museum mostly telling about soviet history of Naryn region located near the eastern bridge over Naryn river.
3. Salkyn-Tor canyon located 12 km east of the town is a favourite place for locals to go for picnic. This place also has a guesthouse where you can stop overnight.
