THE REGION OF TASHKENT

  Situated in the north-east of Uzbekistan between the western slopes of the Tien-Shan mountain kingdom and the Syrdarya River it has a total area of 15 300 sq km supporting a population of 4,4 mln people. Climate is continental, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

  The region has 15 administrative regions. The administrative centre is Tashkent, the capitale of Uzbekistan and the biggest city in the republic of 2 million people. There are 16 towns and villages in the region, the largest are being Angren, Almalik, Ahangaran, Bekabad, Chirchik, Yangiabad and Yangiyul. The area is rich with brown coal, copper, molybdenum, zinc, gold, silver, and other rare metals.

  Tashkent region is the most economically developed in the country. It takes the 2nd place in the country by the industrial production: energy, mining, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemicals, radio-electronics, textiles, cotton purification and processing, agricultural production and processing. Region produces ferrous and non-ferrous metals, agricultural equipment, elevator and transportation equipment, mineral fertilizers, textiles clothing, footwear etc. There is an open-pit quarry extracting brown coal in Angren. There are also numerous heat power plants throughout the area.

  Tashkent region boasts a highly developed agricultural industry. The region's main crop is cotton and cereals, melons and gourds, fruit, vegetables and citrus, also hemp is cultivated for technical purposes. Livestock are used mainly for meat and milk production. Fish breeding dams, horse breeding and poultry breeding is also prevalent in this area.  

  The region has a well-developed transport infrastructure. The total length of its railways is over 360 km and the total length of its roads is 3771 km. The region's major highways are The Great Uzbek Highway, a road that connects Tashkent to the Ferghana Valley and The Tashkent-Angren-Kokand Route over the Kamchik Pass (Kuramin Ridge). There is an international airport in Tashkent.

  The unique Chatkal National Park with beautiful mountains and forests is situated within the region.

Highlights
  Not many historical monuments had preserved here until present times, but still there are a few. The oldest is being the mausoleum of Gumbaz Bobo dated to 11-12 centuries and located near the town of Angren and Zangiata - an architectural complex built by Tamerlaine in 14th century.

  One of the most interesting architectural complexes in this region is Kyzyl Mazar located in Bakebad district. According to legend the complex was built by the Great Bobur - the founder of dynasty and empire of Timurids.

  Very respectable holy spots in Uzbekistan consider the Parpi-Ata and Ahtam Shabat - the burial tomb of the followers of prophet Muhammad located near the town of Toitep. Here the one can meet the pilgrims from all over the Central Asia, as well as from Tatarstan and Bashkorkostan (Russia).

  Just 13 km away from Angren town located the Yangiabad camp site - in winter time it is a good place for cross country and down hill skiing, in summer the one can try horse ridding lessons or bird and flower watching.
