Situated in the south of Ferghana Valley it has a
total area of 6 800 sq km supporting a population of 2 597 000, 70% of whom
lives in rural areas. The climate is continental, with mild winters and very
hot summers.
There are 15 administrative districts in the region.
The administrative centre is Ferghana, the city of 214 000 people. Other main
towns are Kokand, Kuva, Margilan and Rishtan.
Well developed industrial brunches in the area
are oil processing, chemical processing, textile and silk production, butter-fat
production and row materials production. There are oil processing factories
functioning in Ferghana and Aitianck towns. The region also produces equipment
for oil and gas processing, light and textile industries, silk and cotton cloths,
clothing and footwear, glass packaging etc. A wide range of heat power plants
supplies sufficient power throughout the area. The ceramic factory in Rishtan
produce decorative crockery in the national style.
Economy of the region is based on agriculture, mainly
it is cotton growing , sericulture, horticulture and grapes growing.
There are large irrigation systems used for crops.
Animal breeding concentrates on meat and milk production.
The region of Ferghana has a circular railroad
connecting Kokand, Margilan, Kizil and Kiya. The total length of railroads exceeds
200 km. The tarred roads are more than 3 000 km long.
Highlights
Kokand town is probably the worth known town in Uzbekistan, it used
to be the capital of very powerful Kokand Khanate, which occupied the largest
part of Ferghana valley.
One of the most popular places of tourist interest
here is the palace of Hudoyarhan- the last governor of the state. The one can
be impressed with beautiful decorations of the palace. The mausoleum of Madarihon-
a small burial tomb with two minarets related with the name of poetess Nodira
- the wife of the governor of Kokand Umarkhan. She was killed by the request
of Bukharian Emir - Nasrulla. There is also bronze monument of Nodira.
The town of Margilan is known as the centre of
producing of famous Uzbek silk, sewing, wood and clay carving.
There are also a number of health resorts in the
area.
