Situated in the north-east part of the Ferghana Valley,
on the right bank of the Syrdarya River, it has a total area of 7 900 sq km
supporting a population of 1 862 000 people, 62,3% of whom live in rural areas.
The climate is continental, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
The region has 11 administrative regions with the
centre in Namangan City. Other main towns are Kasansay, Pap, Uchkurgan, Turakurgan,
Chartack, Khakolabad and Chust.
The Namangan region is rich with crude oil, gold,
lead, copper, mountain quarz and antimony stocks. Industry is generally light,
comprising two large silk production complexes, footwear manufacturing factories,
cotton processing and textile factories and a non-woven fabric manufacturing
plant.
Uzbek handcrafts prevail in this area- a factory of
Uzbek national knives is located in the town of Chust. There is a large dried
fruit factory in the town of Turakurgan.
Major agricultural brunches are wine production,
cotton producting, horticulture and sericulture. Animal husbandry specializes
in cattle breeding and Angora goats for their especially valuable wool.
The total lenght of the railroads is 140 km while
the car roads lenght is 11 800 km. Tarred roads lenght is 3 000 km.
Highlights Amongst the places of tourist interest in Namangan region need
to mention mausoleum of Hadja-Amin and Madrassah of mulla Kyrgyz. The area of
important archeological finds in the north part of Ferghana valley is the village
of Ahsikent, located 25 km away from province's centre Namangan. That village
was destroyed in earthquake of 17th century and after was not destroyed.
The palace of Kok-Sarai located on the south slope
of Chatkal range in the village of Nanai, known for its apples. From here the
one can reach the beautiful nature spots such us: the upper part of Padshaat
river, Kapchagai gorge and alpine lakes with crystal pure water. Also here located
Sary-Chelyak natural reserve with abundance of wild life, the one can see deer,
bears and birds of different species.
